Company Description
The Newcastle laboratory is the primary provider of creep, stress rupture, stress relaxation and other high temperature static tests within the Bodycote Materials Engineering Division. As a former Rolls-Royce plc subsiduary, the laboratory has an excellent pedigree.
The laboratory is one of Europe's foremost providers of creep and stress rupture tests. The high temperature laboratory operates under tightly controlled conditions with a high degree of monitoring and reporting automation. In all, about 100 test points are available for stress rupture testing and a further 80 points for creep testing. Test temperatures of up to 1150°C can be accommodated.
Turbine blade testing is a core activity and apart from standard specimen creep and stress rupture testing, the laboratory offers:
Whole blade stress rupture
Turbine blade creep damage assessment
Additionally, the laboratory can offer fatigue and structural testing services, supported by the Group's Daventry and Lancaster laboratories.
The laboratory's tool room undertakes high precision specimen machining of aerospace super-alloys and materials used in gas turbines.
History:
The laboratory originated as a nuclear research centre in 1958. It passed to the Reyrolle-Parsons group of companies in 1962 to become involved in power generation research projects.
It subsequently became owned jointly by Parsons and Vickers before joining Northern Engineering Industries (NEI).
NEI was taken over by Rolls Royce plc in 1989 and the laboratory became know as Roll-Royce International Research and Development (RR-IRD).
Bodycote Materials Testing Ltd acquired the business from Rolls-Royce plc in 1998 and the laboratory is a Group centre of excellence for machining and high temperature tests.
