After qualifying as a commercial diver in the early 80’s David was involved with both wet and hyperbaric welding offshore, and in the civil engineering sector. During the 80’s he gained various qualifications in NDT, welding inspection, ultrasonic, MPI and DP and worked as both inspector and welder/diver. In 1987 David set up ‘Hydromech Technical Services Ltd.’ and provided welding, inspection and training services. In 1988 he qualified as an instructor with STA College and completed other TWI technical welding qualifications. In 1990 he wrote his first book ‘The Professional Divers Manual on Wet Welding’ published by Woodhead Publishing. In 1991 David introduced the UK’s first National qualification in underwater welding, through The Marine & Engineering Training Association and began offering training both in the UK and overseas . In 1994 we became an M&ETA approved assessment centre.
Continuing with his studies, David qualified as an International/European welding technologist and received a Diploma in welding engineering and technology in 1992. In 1997 he gained a National certificate in metals technology from Bradford & Ilkley College. More recently, in 2000 David qualified as a Senior Welding Inspector. In 2004 he completed the second revised edition of his book, entitled ‘A Welder’s Mate’, published by Troubador, and is presently preparing a thesis for senior member of TWI/Chartered Engineer status.
