MAJOR ELECTRICAL SAFETY MEASURES IN IRON FOUNDRY
Product News Wednesday, April 1, 2015: HYCON MARECHAL TECHNOLOGY
As a company specialized in the manufacture of brake parts made of cast-iron (drums and discs) for the industrial vehicle markets, Fiday Gestion’s maintenance team regularly inspects and services the plant’s installations. Given the working environment, heat, dust and mechanical shock, the equipment, and in particular the connectors, need to be robust and to last the pace. Let’s have a look at the foundry and how it’s equipped for the long run!
Fiday Gestion’s activities are split into two: firstly the foundry area responsible for the transformation, smelting of raw materials equipped with a press, a sanding and a forming division, and secondly the machining area dedicated to parts coming from the foundry. Each production step undergoes checks in the control room: machine control, speed etc. In 1997, an upgrade of the electrical installations and a replacement of the connectors took place to ensure the equipment would be safer and more likely to cope with the daily operational requirements.
Durability and resistance to shocks
Mr Hermant, maintenance manager, understands only too well that the upgrade to MARECHAL® connectors allowed the company to reduce its maintenance operations. For such a harsh environment, he has specified metal-bodied DN9C multi-contact connectors, rated to 30 A with 2 auxiliaries because of their durability.
Finding rugged and reliable equipment for the smelters, capable of performing was his main goal.
Each machine requires specific electrical connections and in particular the electro-magnet built to resist heavy metal charges of up to 5 tonnes. The electrical power supply in the upper part of the magnet is subjected to violent shocks (and much dust) despite the mechanical protection.
Creating robust connectors is essential for these types of machines, featuring as always a safety mode so unique to the DECONTACTOR™.
Working and safety at all times
Fiday is in constant production (except when the hot blast cupola stops). The tools and equipment must be robust and be capable of high-performance over time. This constant activity is as demanding for the staff as for the machines. There can be no mistakes as far as electrical safety is concerned! A long life span and resistance to heat and shocks are therefore some of the many advantages provided by MARECHAL® connectors. For each smelter this represents a valuable time saving. Just like Plug & Play. They can plug-in and plug out without thinking about it.
Responsiveness and satisfaction
Whether they are used on individual machine tools to connect portable tools brought in by external contractors or in smelting areas where the temperature is high, MARECHAL® products function to the satisfaction of the engineers and the smelters! Mr Hermant confirms that the blue multipins are in daily use and to date “are performing as expected and have become a ‘fit and forget’ item for us”. Whether in high-tech or heavy industry, MARECHAL ELECTRIC’s product expertise and technical service generate satisfactory solutions for their customers.
