With a range up to 10m and two independent switchpoints the new O1 sensor from market leader ifm electronic has taken diffuse optical sensors more than just a step forward, it is a huge leap in technology. Traditional background-suppressed diffuse sensors won’t reach much beyond a couple of metres, but this new award-winning sensor from ifm electronic outclasses everything.

The breakthrough has been made possible by the award-winning, innovative PMD (photonic mixer device) chip, which, for the first time ever, combines time-of-flight measurement onto a single chip, making such a sensor compact and cost-effective.

The efector pmd, as it is known, uses a visible laser transmitter for easy sighting, accuracy and of course to achieve the long range. As the distance is actually measured, the effects of reflection from background can be ignored, making this the longest-range background-suppressed sensor on the market today. The display will show the user where the switchpoints have been set, even in imperial units if required, and the pushbutton setting is straightforward.

Using an industry-standard M12 connector, this compact, robust sensor is suitable for standard industrial environments and opens up a new world of opportunities in optical sensing.
