Testing Magnalube: Rust Inhibition

Testing Magnalube: Rust Inhibition

Service News Thursday, July 19, 2012: Magnalube, Inc.

There is a long list of rust inhibiting lubricants on the market today, and we are often asked how Magnalube-G stacks up against them. Answering that question definitively requires testing that puts different lubricants to work in an actual corrosive environment. One of our OEM customers did just that when evaluating Magnalube-G.

The testing involved three samples of 3/4-inch carbon steel rod cut into half inch lengths. One specimen was left untreated, another was coated with Magnalube-G and the third was coated with Boeshield T–9.

The specimens were placed in individual containers and submerged half way into tap water, leaving the top of the specimen exposed to atmosphere for 7.5 weeks. When the results came in:

  • The uncoated steel began to rust within a day. At the end of 7.5 week, the exposed portion of the specimen exhibited a heavy rust scale.
  • The Boeshield specimen rusted within one week. After 7.5 weeks, the exposed portion of the specimen had regions blistered with rust.
  • The Magnalube specimen, by contrast, took the full 7.5 weeks before any visible signs of rust appeared. Even then, the rusting was minimal, occurring only as a small discolorations the size of pin heads. Ninety-nine percent of the part was still clean, shiny steel. Magnalube-G.

From the test results, our customer concluded that Magnalube-G would be the best fit for use on steel threads to prevent rusting and seizing.
