Hazelmere water treatment works geared for greater capacity – fast
Product News Friday, November 9, 2012: Degremont (Pty) Ltd
Last month, the Degrémont team handed over a Turnkey Design and Build Package Water Treatment Plant (UCD) to state owned entity, Umgeni Water.
Umgeni Water, is one of Africa’s most successful organisations involved in water management, and is the largest supplier of bulk potable water in the Province of KwaZulu-Natal.
The contract was awarded earlier this year in May and the plant was completed in just four months, being delivered in September.
Production capacity of the UCD is 6Ml per day and the goal of the project is to increase potable water output at the existing Hazelmere Water Treatment Works.
Some of the features which will make Umgeni Water’s new UCD Compact Unit a powerful tool in the purification and treatment of drinking water include:
- The units are all skid-mounted
- Preassembly in the Degrémont workshop, which is what allowed for the UCD to be delivered promptly
- The UCD design obviates the need for a separate backwash water tank
- Treated water is delivered at a pressure of two bars or more
- A complete reagents skid, including reagents preparation and dosing devices
Principally used to treat surface water, Degrémont’s UCD Compact Unit is a complete, self-contained drinking water treatment plant.
It is based on a compact conventional process using coagulation flocculation, lamellar clarification, sand-filtration and chlorine disinfection. In addition, the clarifier’s sludge extraction is automatic.
How it works:
Coagulation-flocculation
After coagulant is applied, raw water flows into a flocculation chamber to increase the size and cohesion of the floc.
Settling
A clarifier equipped with lamellar modules is used to accelerate the separator is withdrawn automatically at regular intervals. Water is transferred from the flocculation compartment to the settling tank via a stilling chamber located beneath the lamellar modules. Settled water is collected in the settling tank overflow and pumped to the filters.
Pressure filtration
Inside the filters, water is distributed above the filter media and flows down through the sand, which traps the suspended solids. Nozzles fitted on the filter floor collect the water evenly and then discharge it directly towards the treated water tank, following the application of a disinfection agent.
Water and air scour
Backwashing uses filtered water from the operation filter, coupled with air scour. This design:
- Cleans the filter media thoroughly
- Minimises the duration of the backwash cycle, and
- Eliminates the need for a backwash water tank and pump
The UCDs can be ordered with manual or automatic filter backwashing. UCDs are available in a range of units, producing from five up to 720 m3 per hour.
Other specification options include:
- Pre-chlorination
- Production pressure up to 7,6 bar
- Chlorine gas
- UV disinfection
- Iron removal
- Automation based on Programmable Logic Controller.
