Cummins SA raises R100 000 for Alexandra Police Station
Company News Wednesday, May 22, 2013: Cummins Diesel South Africa
10 October 2012
Alexandra Police Station has received much needed financial support, thanks to funds raised at an annual golf day hosted by the South African division of Cummins - a global leader in the manufacture, sales and servicing of diesel engines and related technology.
Cummins, its clients and suppliers have raised a total of R100 000 for the Alexandra community police station at this year's Golf Day event, which was held at Modderfontein Golf Course in Edenvale on September 27, 2012.
Cummins South Africa corporate responsibility lead Paul Kable notes that the initiative started in 1998 as part of the Business Against Crime initiative and, following its enormous support and success, has been registered as a Section 21 Company to ensure compliance and proper management of all funds.
"The Section 21 Company, which consists of Cummins and Alexandra Police Station representatives, meets every six weeks to discuss the management of funds and to draw up a 'wish list' for the station. Over the past 14 years, Cummins SA has assisted Alexandra Police Station in making considerable improvements to the building and its customer services," he explains.
These improvements include: setting up new tellers booths for client services, erecting glass petitions and ropes to make an organised queuing system, installing signage and organograms of senior management on duty and the establishment of information counters.
Kable does, however admit that a lot of these developments are now outdated, and will be upgraded with the funds raised from this year's event. "This initiative has helped to ensure that the police station is far more proficient and customer friendly. This year’s funds will be used to streamline the operations at the police station and make it run more efficiently and effectively to provide the customers with the best possible service."
According to Kable, the biggest challenge with these sorts of projects is to ensure sustainability, and as Cummins focuses on expanding its footprint across Africa, he notes that the company takes its corporate social responsibility very seriously.
"As a socially responsible corporate citizen, Cummins encourages all of its employees to do at least four hours of community service per year, which they are allowed to do during work hours. The Golf day is the easiest way to raise large amounts of money in a single day, and I would like to thank everybody who gave up their time and donated to this very worthwhile cause," he concludes.
