07 May, 2013: Cummins South Africa has received positive feedback after successfully displaying its power generation capabilities at the 2013 Power & Electricity World Africa  conference, held at the Sandton Convention Centre between April 8 and April 11, 2013.

Power & Electricity World Africa is the largest and most holistic power and energy business event on the continent, that brings together key players in the international power and energy sector. With more than 4 500 attendees and over 250 exhibitors, Cummins Power Generation’s  general manager for commercial sales in Southern Africa Cletus Makombe notes that the event served as the ideal platform to highlight the company's comprehensive range of power generation products and related services.

"This is the fourth year that Cummins Power Generation has exhibited at the conference, where the latest industry innovation and expertise can be showcased on a large scale, in one central location. As a global leader in the manufacture, sales and servicing of diesel engines and related technologies, Cummins believes that it is important to showcase the company's power generation offering," he explains.

Although Cummins is traditionally recognised as an engine manufacturer, Makombe points out that Power Generation is one of the key focus areas of the Cummins business in Africa. "As we are all well aware, power both prime and standby is a need that is important and top priority throughout Africa. "Having secured a prime position at the expo, we experienced large volumes of visitors, which has served us well from a marketing, branding and engagement perspective," he continues.

Cummins Power Generation co-exhibited with Cummins Generator Technologies, which produces and markets AC Generators from 0,6 to 30 000 kVA, complete electrical equipment for power stations up to 200 MW, products for optimised power quality, inverters for wind power systems, rotating UPS Systems, protection and control systems for low and medium voltage.

Products on display at the event included components and whole goods, in addition to complete generator sets and alternators. Makombe adds that Cummins Power Generation is a leader in the design and manufacture of pre-integrated generator sets, ranging from 8 kVA to 3300 kVA. All major components, including engine, alternator, transfer switches and control systems are designed and manufactured according to the highest standards set by Cummins.

"We call this integrated approach the 'Power of One', where each element works in harmony from the start. The result of pre-integrated power solutions is smaller equipment footprints, reduced installation time and higher system reliability. That's the Power of One," he says.

Makombe highlights the fact that the company also displayed its world-class G-Drive diesel engine, which is specifically designed for power generators. "Constant product research and development is undertaken to ensure that the Cummins G-Drive range of engines set the benchmark in the industry for efficiency, durability and low emissions. "

The Cummins G-Drive range of engines spans over 50 models, ranging between the entry level 2,5 l model, to the large scale 78 l model. Makombe indicates that the Cummins G-Drive engines are available at both 50 Hz and 60 Hz, and are engineered to supply outstanding performance and reliability. "Our innovative technology also means that many Cummins G-Drive engines already meet strict US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and European Union (EU) emissions regulations, which delivers the advantage of future proof compliance."

According to Makombe, Cummins Power Generation has the ability to meet any demands for standby power, whether it is a simple diesel generator set or a complete PowerCommand pre-integrated power generation system. "The Cummins range of permanently installed and mobile power systems have been used across Africa by various hospitals, factories, office buildings, hotels, casinos and telecommunication centres - for both long and short term standby power needs."

Cummins Power Generation boasts more than 90 years of experience in international power generation, and Makombe adds that the company is capable of meeting all African energy needs, including; continuous, prime, peaking, standby, cogeneration or a complete turnkey power plant. "In addition to constantly developing innovative technologies, Cummins Power Generation also places a strong emphasis on providing customers with the highest standards of after sales service and technical support, thereby adding further value to the project as a whole, " he concludes.

Established in 1919 in Indiana, USA, Cummins today employs more than 40 000 people worldwide, and has an annual turnover of US $10,8-billion.
