ACTOM Air Pollution Control executes fast-track dust control contract for cement plant upgrade effic

Product News Monday, August 26, 2013: ACTOM Air Pollution Control

ACT0M Air Pollution Control recently completed a turnkey contract for the design, manufacture, installation and commissioning of three high-efficiency bag filters at PPC’s Slurry cement factory near Mafikeng, North West Province.

The multi-million rand contract, awarded in May last year, involved the supply of a 76 000 Am3/hour capacity reverse pulse bag filter to replace the existing Finishing Mill 4’s electrostatic precipitator (ESP). In addition, two bag filters, each with an air moving capacity of 16 000 Am3/hour, were supplied to de-dust two new high efficiency separators that were installed as part of the upgrade.

The installation and commissioning were completed on schedule at the end of April this year.

“The challenging part of the contract was to install all three bag filters during the allocated eight-week shutdown period,” said Raymond Hopkins, ACT0M Air Pollution Control’s Project Manager on the contract.

“The work that was completed during this shutdown period involved the dismantling and removal of the existing ESP, the installation of the new mill bag filter on the original steelwork and concrete structure that supported the old ESP and the installation of the new bag filters for the two new separators. Furthermore, all three filters and associated ducting had to be insulated and cladded during the shutdown phase.

“A contractual condition, due to the short shutdown schedule, required sharing the site with the other contractors involved in the upgrade. ACTOM is pleased to state that the contract was completed within the agreed schedule and with zero safety-related incidents,” Hopkins said.

The main mill bag filter was designed to handle the higher dust volumes and all bag filters were designed to reduce dust emission levels in accordance with the newly legislated 2015 environmental emission target of 30 mg/Nm3 at high temperatures.

Dipeen Dama, PPC’s Senior Project Manager, said ACTOM Air Pollution Control implemented all stages of the contract efficiently, from design through to installation. “Performance testing of the mill bag filter was completed early in July 2013. The results of the isokinetic dust sampling measurements taken confirmed that the performance of the new mill bag filter met the contractual guarantee of less than 30 mg/Nm3,” he commented.
